How  Do You Treat For Rodents?

Out of the many rodent treatment methods available, Restoration Pest Management chooses the baiting method. This treatment provides the fastest and most effective rodent extermination. Interior bait stations provide a food source for the current population and the exterior bait stations provide a food source for rodents before they enter your home. The rodents freely enter the bait stations and feed as they would naturally. The bait is a fast working, very targeted, non-secondary toxin that that passes through the rodent quickly. Often the rodent will find its way outside before the bait takes effect.

Will Your Baits Hurt My Pets?

While all baits are chemicals/pesticides and cause harm to any human or animal if enough is ingested; the rodent baits that Restoration Pest Management uses are very targeted to mice and rats. Meaning these chemicals were designed specifically for use with  these particular rodents and are not secondary toxins. We are very careful to use all chemicals according to their federally mandated labels. All baits that are in areas where humans or animals may come into contact with them are sealed in child and animal resistant bait stations.

Will I Smell Dead Rodents?

Most often when mice feed on the baits they then look for a water source outside of the structure. Sometimes rodents will get trapped inside walls before they are able to make their way outside. In this instance you may have an odor for about a week. Dead mice dehydrate very quickly and generally do not leave any lingering odor.

There are thousands of species of rodents found all over the world in just about every land mass. Of these, the common rat and mouse are some of the most despised as they can infest buildings causing considerable damage, spreading diseases, and are just a general nuisance.

The Rattus Norvegicus, or the Norway Rat, is a common pest found in the greater Ohio area and can make their home anywhere food and water are available. House mice are much smaller and generally lighter colored than their rat cousins. While not as common, other rodents like squirrels can make their home inside attics or chimneys. Almost all rodents can have a dozen offspring and a short gestation period, allowing for an even minor infestation to quickly spiral out of control.

Aside from the most severe outbreaks, rodents often hide in homes for many months before being observed. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are several signs that you might have a rat or mouse infestation. This includes chewed up food packaging, small holes in walls or floors, stale smells, collections of nesting material, and droppings. 
 
The CDC recommends a three-step plan for dealing with an infestation: Seal up, trap up, and clean up. When it comes to sealing you have to be very thorough, as many rodents can squeeze through a hole as small as the the size of a nickel. These pests can be sneaky too and often make openings behind cabinets, appliances, around fireplaces, inside vents, crawl spaces, and just about anywhere in your home. Smaller holes can be sealed with a bit of steel wool and caulking, while larger holes will probably need a piece of metal or cement. 

A key to controlling your rodent problem is to cut off their food and water. Clean up any leftovers along with sealing food in thick plastic or metal containers. Garbage, recycling, compost, and animal feed should be kept as far away from the house as possible. 
 
While the do it yourself approach may eliminate a few pests that you see, they are not foolproof, nor do they eliminate the underlying issues.
