One of the reasons is that the Westervelt brothers donated land for the construction of a new school for the township, the Blendon Young Men’s Seminary. The town multiplied from then on, and by 1840, a post office was named Westerville in honor of the two generous brothers. Although the Seminary did not exist for very long, the town continued to grow, and even then, represented the progressive values that Westerville, OH, upholds today.
Residents of Westerville – even in the 1850s – supported abolitionist values and also participated in the Underground Railroad! Not all of its history is peachy-keen, however: Westerville residents became notorious
for supporting the prohibition as well. So much so, that the first beer served in Uptown Westerville since 1933, was in 2006.
