Roaches

Cockroaches are one of the most relentless pests infesting homes in the United States. Infestations snowball and can be difficult to prevent in areas where food is prepared, and standing water is accessible. Roach infestations are not only embarrassing but dangerous to the health of those in the home.

Because cockroaches feed on waste, they contaminate items they come in contact with such as food, eating utensils, furniture, and other things around the house. These contaminants include pathogenic microbes that cause food poisoning and other illnesses.

Cockroaches also produce allergens to which many people are sensitive. Children who are exposed to roaches are among those most commonly susceptible to these allergens. If you are allergic to cockroaches, their presence may cause sneezing, watering eyes, nasal congestion, wheezing, or dangerous asthmatic episodes.

These pests are extremely problematic because they enter buildings through several methods. They may enter through door frames and window gaps or ventilation systems. Cockroaches can also make their way into your home on firewood, in cardboard boxes, or on secondhand items brought into the house.

The first step in controlling cockroaches is prevention. Prevention begins by ensuring that food scraps and waste are cleaned from your home, including on counter-tops and stoves. Similarly, remove areas of standing water. Check plumbing for leaks and regularly monitor and clean sink traps and aquariums. It is also important to remove nesting areas that roaches would find easily accessible. Clutter is exceptionally appealing to roaches. Stacks of paper, cardboard boxes, and baskets of soiled clothing are common areas for roaches to gather.

Owners may not know they have a problem until a few roaches have turned into a full-blown infestation. To avoid this, you need to know the signs of cockroaches. Roaches tend to travel around the home discreetly, so check corners, backs of drawers, furniture joints, and cabinets for insect fragments, eggs, excrement smears, and musty odors. They are mostly active at night, so if you are looking for live roaches, you will have the best results after dark.
